New York New Wave - A Surfrider Foundation, Nouvelle Vague & SMASH Charity Art Event was a highlight for sure

The Bowery Hotel 2nd floor was packed with A-listers and who's who from Surf, Art, Fashion and Music...

Cats were really digging on the Punk, Funk, Blues, Reggae and Classic Early NY Hip-Hop...

I dropped 'Plant Rock', some Clash and a few other classics that really got people jamming...

At one point I even checked Slater doing a head-knock!

DJ Just Be...? Rocking a Set or 2 from 'Coast to Coast'

I Played a few DJ sets in J-Bay during my missions.

Wok and a few friends put on a party called,

'Murder On The Dance Floor'

They asked me to play for a bit.

My new amigo Heitor Alves was nice enough to let me test out his Limited Edition Skull Candy Aviators a few times... Nice!

The cats at Monster had a big tent and DJ setup they used for promo and a few cool events that got loose quick.

Waves Of Plenty, Boards of Many

Boy did I score some waves over the last 2 months of costal book tour missions. Riding anything I could get my hands, or should I say 'Feet' On! I will try to give a good record of the waves and boards I was able to ride, although a few sessions went by undocumented.

But, that is the magic of the here and now...

Coastal Havoc - Part 2 (Winter 2011)

I was blessed with a lot of Jeffrey's for weeks on end. This is what they call 'Booll'Shit' J-Bay in Oz, if you are even lucky enough to witness this magic in real life...

I was able to spend some time with Derek Hynd (who I quoted in the final page of my coffee table book about South Africa). We got to surfed a few gems around the eastern cape and shared some cool times; I even squeezed out a few of his wild ideas on a new board to challenge the norm!

So its been about 2 months of costal book tour missions...

You don't even want to know about the waves I've been getting, which is quite funny because I have been in J-Bay for a while scoring with the locals and as soon as the WCT madness hits town it goes about a flat as a freshwater lake.

I was able to link up and spend some time with Mr. D Hynd, whom I had never met but quoted in the final page of my new book. We even got to work on a little thing for me to challenge my surfing, she is almost done and her name is 'Dreamweaver"

(but more on that later....)

I was up in Durban for 2 mad weeks playing gigs, selling books, surfing in boardies, making art, skating Indigo and a whole lot more... I was able to photograph one of the largest collections of my good friend Buffy's work I have ever seen. All the work belongs to Mully the main O' and owner of Electric Eye Tattoo in Durban. He is a classic bru and a legend around the (031). When I talked to Buffy about Mully's collection, he said he did all that rad work for Mully because he has such a rad vibe. To be honest I am a bit envious of his Buffy collection and you will soon see why.... Enjoy-

Feature Article On German Graffiti Artist Loomit In Multumesc Culture Mag

I was recently asked by a youth culture magazine in Hungry for photographs of German 3D Graffiti Pioneer Loomit. They needed images for use in a feature/article they were doing on him. Loomit is one of the international graffiti artists featured in my book in addition to being one of the few artist selected for the 'Art In The Streets' museum survey exhibition at the MOCA Los Angeles.

Mark Appleyard & Chris Haslam - Back in South Africa, for a bit of skateboarding and a whole lot more!!!

Mark Appleyard & Chris Haslam were in South Africa recently for the Globe SA Tour, this tour was also part of a Public Qualifier Series for the The Maloof Money Cup later in the year. We linked up a couple times for beers as well as had a few rad skate sessions. Chris Haslam is a classic dude and makes the funniest calls, not to mention he kills 'anything' on a skateboard. He has a copy of ('Expressions Book One South Africa') my big bad baby at his home in Canada - more on that soon.....

Mark Appleyard lives in Cali near my home town of LB and we know/knew a few of the same cats. He is super chilled out, even when he's throwing hammers on a useless wooden toy.

'Art In The Streets' Opens at MOCA - With Controversy and Anticipation

Art in the Streets opened at MOCA in Los Angeles recently. It is the first major U.S. museum survey of graffiti and street art.

But at what cost? Exploitation to the masses may not get the respect and understanding originally intended. The original LA mural was removed because of complaints, Revok was arrested, and the list goes on...

Artist Blu was commissioned to do a huge mural on a wall outside of the MOCA,

but it was buffed' due to complaints.

Free Revok - Well Know Los Angeles Graffiti Artist Arrested

The graffiti Artist known as Revok, whose work is displayed in the “Art in the Streets” exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, was sentenced Monday to 180 days in jail after a judge found that he had violated the terms of his probation in a previous vandalism conviction.

Jason Williams aka Revok, appeared in a Van Nuys courtroom Monday where he was found to have violated his probation on a misdemeanor vandalism charge by failing to pay adequate restitution to his victims, according to prosecutors. Williams was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport last Thursday as he prepared to board a plane for Ireland.

His arrest came amid controversy surrounding the museum’s “Art in the Streets” graffiti and street art exhibition, which the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department have criticized as promoting vandalism and tagging.

Sheriff’s investigators said they are conducting a wide investigation into Revok.

“As a result of evidence discovered during his April 21 arrest, other incidents of vandalism were found in the county of Los Angeles,” said Capt. Mike Parker.

Investigators said the L.A. County district attorney’s office could file felony charges against Williams, who was arrested by a sheriff’s transit team that specializes in catching vandals.

The team recently arrested Cristian Gheorghiu, also known as Smear, another tagger-turned-artist. Gheorghiu received 45 days’ community service for violating his probation. He was arrested two days after The Times published a story on his life as an artist with tagging roots.

Revok is among the best known and boldest taggers in Los Angeles. Williams, a one-time member of the graffiti crew “Mad Society Kings” or MSK, was arrested in 2009 in Melbourne, Australia, after a series of highly publicized large pieces. A resident of the Fairfax district, Williams was placed on probation for felony vandalism in 2009 during the Coachella music festival.

He also was arrested in November 2009 by deputies near the 33rd Graffiti Art Store, where images of his graffiti were featured. During a later search of Williams’ home, deputies found several hundred paint cans, a police badge and a fire extinguisher — a tool commonly used for applying large tags.

They also found a stolen detour sign and digital photos of his graffiti work on his phone.

His bail was set for an astounding $320,000, which is more than any of the other cases in LA over the past 2 months including number of major assaults, rapes and few charges of molestation.

Do they want us to think of artistic displays of expression and creativity as criminal?

This Photo is a section of the eyes

from a large painting Buffy did of me, it took almost 5 years and 4 other canvases for me to get this piece. Every time he finished a painting for me it would get swooped up by some random collector or gallery before I could link with him to get it. He had this painting hung in his studio for a few months and had to turn down some huge offers for the piece. He told me how the painting almost seem to be looking after him and that it would appear to change mood or feeling from day to day. If you ever get to see the whole painting you will know it was well worth all the time and weight.

Skullcandy SA hooked up a bunch of rad promo ish to give away (the stuff went faster than a Gorilla Biscuit song). Rumor has it even Poppa Dukes showed up for a bit during my set and jammed out in the back.

Things have been very analog lately, so the post have been lacking a bit. Have no fear, the goods are coming, I was up to some 'serious' active duty; missioning from the Wes-Kus to Northern Zulu Land in less then 3 weeks. My Dad was in South Africa for flash visit and I had not seen him in over 3 years so we did as much as we could in the short time he was here. I will be posting tons of stuff over the next 2 week so don't fret. For now, Peep this.....

Green Pop Goes Artistic

A few weeks ago, I helped out Green Pop with a reverse graffiti campaign. It was for a good cause, very creative and a lot of fun. We used a high pressure water-hose on walls near the main foot traffic area of UCT.

I made a real Hand-Cut (Hand-Drawn) Stencil to test out, the cardboard did not last long against the high pressure water-hose but it still came out looking fresh and don't worry you will be sure to see it again, its getting vectored...

'The Beat' Mash Up Cape Town and Less Than Two Weeks Later I Stumble Across Their 1st Album On Wax In Durban...

'The Beat' (known in North America as The English Beat) were formed in Birmingham, England in 1978, during a period of high unemployment and social upheaval in the UK. They are a 2 Tone Ska band who's songs fuse Ska, Soul, Reggae, and Punk Rock.

I had the opportunity to cover their Nov. show in Cape Town, it was a classic performance and I linked with the band for a bit after the show. Ranking Roger was a 'spot on chap' and his son Ranking Junior has got jokes, not to mention he is a sly one with the ladies.

A local print music guide was doing a review and needed an image, this friend of mine hit me up last min because they didn't have decent pictures to supply the mag. So I sent them 2 or 3 images before leaving for DBN, they used one of them but I was not around when the mag was out. While in DBN funny enough I found their 1st Album on Vinyl for like 20 Rand (about 3 Dollars) at a pop-up record shop.

When I got back another friend had cut out the article and saved it for me. Here it is along with a few other images of the night. I will be uploading a Funky-Bad'Man Vinyl Mix next week with one of the rad tracks until then,

RedBull NightShift Featuring Jordy Smith and Friends Goes Down in Camps Bay with Flying Success!

Jordy Smith was chilling in Cape Town for a while in January enjoying the summer vibes before heading out to begin the 2011 WCT. Seeing as he finished off last year 2nd in the world to the 10-time Champion Phenom known a Kelly Slater, RedBull decided to give him a little treat for having such a bad-ass year. And thus gave birth to the RedBull NightShift held in Camps Bay on the 9th of Jan, 2011. Jordy along with seven of his good friends had a blast in the dark, literally. Boosting Airs into the evening using tons of floodlights; they had Jet-Skies pulling and whipping them into knee high shore-break.

I don't think anyone could have anticipated the huge turnout for this inaugural event. Smith's surf buddies who joined him in the water were: Craig Anderson, Damien Fahrenfort, Ricky Basnett, Travis Logie, Rudy Palmboom Jr, Warwick Wright and Royden Bryson. I shot a few med-format portraits of Jordy prior to the event and a few images before the sun and light were gone. After sunset I shot a few video clips that I will be editing together into something good. Here is a bit of what went down...

A Wave Of Loss Sweeps The Surfing Community As A Great Ocean Warrior Departs, Andy Irons Passes-Away On Tuesday the 2nd of November 2010

Tragic news sweeps the Surfing World! Three-time world surfing champion Andy Irons died Tuesday. He was 32.

Irons contracted an illness in Portugal in October and missed his Round 1 and 2 heats at the Rip Curl Search Puerto Rico comp on the ASP WCT on Saturday. He was in route home to Hawaii to see his own doctor and had to stop on an overnight layover in Dallas. He was found by staff at the Grand Hyatt Hotel at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport after he failed to respond to a wakeup call.

An official statement by Billabong, one of Irons' main sponsors, said he was suffering from Dengue Fever. "He fell ill in Puerto Rico and went to see the contest doctor," said Stephane Tenailleau, European spokesman for Billabong. "The doctor told him to withdraw from the contest and go back home to fix the disease." Tarrant County Medical Examiner Nizam Peerwani said a ruling on the cause of death could take several weeks, pending the conclusion of a number of lab tests. A report in the Honolulu Star Advertiser, citing the same medical examiner, said that Irons' death is being investigated as a possible methadone overdose and reported the drug was found along with other prescription drugs at the scene; but who knows if the public will ever know what really happened and does that really matter as much as the fact that another historic surfer has fallen and will be truly missed. In addition to why he was permitted to travel in his condition in the first place.

Irons was arguably the most dominant surfer of the early to mid 2000s. In addition to his three consecutive world titles from 2002 to 2004, Irons had 20 World Tour victories and four Triple Crown Of Surfing titles. But more significant than the statistics was his reputation as perhaps the only true rival nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater has ever known, and the two engaged in some of the most memorable heats and title races in history. Andy returned to the WCT this year after a one-year hiatus. Fans and fellow tour competitors were happy to see Irons back in the hunt and with a win at the Billabong Pro Tahiti in August signified a return to form in the kind of powerful, barreling surf in which he made his reputation. Arguably one of the greatest modern surfers in 6-8 foot waves (Hawaiian Style *Wave hight measured by the back of the wave and heavily under size cuz thats' how we do when you start surfing for real, this is not fishing bro*).

Fellow surfer Reef McIntosh, who grew up with Irons on Kauai, said Wednesday from Hawaii: "I talked to Phil [Irons], I talked to Bruce [Irons] -- everyone's just crying. I was surfing Mavericks with Shane [Dorian] and everyone else and saw all these missed calls. My girlfriend called and said Andy had died. I didn't return these calls because I didn't want to drive and cry at the same time. Everyone on Kauai is crying right now."

Professionally, Irons was a fierce competitor as well as a dedicated and driven athlete. Out of the water, Irons was remembered as a humble person who loved Hawaii. He was also intensely devoted to his family, friends and fans.

"Andy was incredible. I think he was a person that always wore his heart on his sleeve. He didn't try to impress anyone. He was just all about what he wanted to do. He was an amazing competitor," Australian surfer Mick Fanning said.

Philip Andrew Irons, "Andy" was born and raised in Hawaii, where he was married three year ago. His wife is less than 8 weeks from giving birth to their first born son. Revered by many on Kauai, along with his younger brother, Bruce, also a pro surfer. The Irons' father taught the brothers to surf on the North Shore at a young age and both pushed each other to climb to the top of the surf world.

In Puerto Rico, more than 130 surfers along the island's north coast paddled out Wednesday to clasp hands and form a circle as tradition dictates to honor a surfer who dies. Fanning threw flowers into the middle as others cheered and splashed before they broke off one by one to catch a wave in honor of Irons. "We're a surfing family," Fanning said in a statement. "We're all hurting right now." The Association of Surfing Professionals said it would suspend competition again Thursday out of respect for Irons and expected the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Search to resume Friday. Slater was among those who paddled out. The surfers grabbed their boards with one hand and clutched bright yellow flowers with their other as they shuffled quietly through the sand and entered the water. "Although he and I butted heads a lot a few years ago, I have so many good memories of Andy and we have become pretty good friends since," Slater said in a statement. "We're just baffled that he's gone."

In Hawaii, a surf tournament was held on Sunset Beach with 20- to 30-foot waves pounding the North Shore. The mood was somber with some grief-stricken surfers pulling out of the event.

"I paddled out this morning with a lei to put in the water and it hit home again. It makes you want to do it for him and be the animal that he was in the water, but at the same time you know that there's a piece of surfing that's not replaceable," friend Rainos Hayes said. "There's only one Andy Irons, and he was it."

Meanwhile, a flood of messages were posted online.

"RIP buddy you will always be in our hearts," tweeted Sunny Garcia, a former world champion from Hawaii.

Irons' family released a statement thanking the surfer's friends and fans and requesting privacy "so their focus can remain on one another during this time of profound loss."

Only a few months back I sat with Andy and his wife on a bench in a grassy front yard overlooking the impossibles section of Super Tubes(J'Bay) talking to him about his features in my over 700 page youth culture coffee table book I am releasing later this month in South Africa and next year internationally. Now I look back and feel blessed to have had a real conversation with him. My thoughts go out to his wife and family, he has marked surfing with a lasting footprint....

Museum Photographic Art Gallery's Opening Exhibition - The New Landscape

Museum Gallery recently held its opening exhibition (I'm happy to be in) titled THE NEW LANDSCAPE. Which showcased a bold array of works from a number of talented photographers surrounding the interpretation of new landscape both vague and classic. Tons of cats showed up from all walks of life, it was good to see people outside the art scene as well as some heavy hitters. The opening was packed when I arrived despite getting there just after the we-are-awesome.com photo peps' bailed (which is a good thing because most of the time they use me for a banner or something) they do slideshow/features of all the uber cool people that show up at big events. The kind folks at Sailor Jerry (Class Rum 'for those of you late to the ship!) hooked up the gallery proper to keep everyone smiling. It was a rad night to say the least; big up to Dylan Culhane for all his efforts and sorting everything out. Primo Hits South Africa For The First Time and DJ Just Be...? Gives You Free Daisies!!!

DJ Premiere played in Cape Town South Africa @ The Assembly last week. I was amped to be shooting Press/Media for the event, so a few hours before the show I put together a little mix to get hyped. I had seen him a few times before, the last was New Year's 2006 in Las Vegas but he was playing a corp. gig to less than 150 people and was dropping a lot of non HipHop tracks. This time I knew he would play classics, and he did. He dropped mostly his own production to a solid crowd. I shot some top class stills on celluloid and even a short video clip on this little digi' camera I normally use as a dictaphone for interviews. Primo finished around 4am and was still cool enough to let me shoot a portrait on his way out. STR CRD Sneaker Event 2010

STR CRD was South Africa's first sneaker and streetwear convention. The event brought passionate streetwear lovers together from many avenues of Youth Culture. Visitors were treated to a promotional pop up village and displays of new sneaker collections from the likes of Nike, DC, New Balance, Adidas, Puma, Converse, 2BOP, Iron Fist and many other local and international brands.

Even the Skateboarders had something to do. Jamie O'Brien from Woodies Ramps made a big sick box complete with stairs, ledges and a kinked rail. The Boyz were killing it, with or without the commentary. I think Justus Kotze ended up winning and props to Will Twala for killin' it with a taped up busted wrist.

Graff artists, B-boy crews and hip hop groups were also on hand showing off their skills. It was great to see so many streetwear lovers in one place, many who flew in from places like Joburg, Durban and abroad.

One of the highlights for all the Sneaker Freaks was checking out the freshly customised kicks from Alex Nash, a renowned sneaker Artist. Some cats would have gladly bartered anything (even a family member) to go home with one of his highly sought-after sneakers.

Echo Ledge GoPro Skateboard Clip - Test Round

I linked up with the cats from Echo Ledge at Sports Unlimited after the African Vacation Tour Demo over the weekend. They asked me to help them test their new GoPro rig for the first time, it was a bit strange to skate but i got a few good runs. Check out this rad little video they put together with some of the footage...

They also have a surfboard mount that I am frothing to test. Not to mention I'm keen to get few more tricks and maybe some better angles on the skateboard, maybe the bowl in Stellie'...
