This is W.I.P. Work In Progress!!! WIP New York Entrance Mural Round 1

WIP New York is one of the newest and freshest clubs in NYC
W.I.P  aka Work In Progress - is a new exclusive club/space in New York City where art, music and everything in between come to play. It is located on the side and kind of under the already well known and established Greenhouse Super Club in Soho, Manhattan.
12 Artist from around the world were asked to work on the space and help start it off right by creating something unique. It officially opens in November but there are soft launches and events happening already. I was in NY doing promotion and a small launch event for my book, Next thing I need to change my ticket back to LA because I want an extra week to rock out on the entrance to this new place that will be slaying New York soon...
I was honored to be given a large area in the entrance. It was used to create a evolving space while I was there working on the mural/instillation. And so was born -
The Circus Economy Carny Photo Booth
Here are a few images form the beginnings...
I covered the ceiling in one area with "Hello My Name Is" stickers so that fellow creative cats had a place to get up!

People really dug my work and the staff were a cool bunch.
I shot classic images and portraits, I'm going back next month to do some more. Amped!!!
The last 2 are from Instagram to see more images check out -

Primo Hits South Africa For The First Time and DJ Just Be...? Gives You Free Daisies!!!

DJ Premiere played in Cape Town South Africa @ The Assembly last week. I was amped to be shooting Press/Media for the event, so a few hours before the show I put together a little mix to get hyped. I had seen him a few times before, the last was New Year's 2006 in Las Vegas but he was playing a corp. gig to less than 150 people and was dropping a lot of non HipHop tracks. This time I knew he would play classics, and he did. He dropped mostly his own production to a solid crowd. I shot some top class stills on celluloid and even a short video clip on this little digi' camera I normally use as a dictaphone for interviews. Primo finished around 4am and was still cool enough to let me shoot a portrait on his way out. Here is a link for some free Primo' Daisies and for those of you who missed it, check out the video clip...

OVER THE LAST TWENTY YEARS, COGNITO HAS CONTRIBUTED VASTLY TO THE PROPAGATION OF HIP HOP CULTURE— FROM CONCERT PROMOTER TO FATBEATS RECORD STORE OPERATOR TO TOURING THE WORLD AS A MEMBER OF THE UNDERGROUND GROUP MASSINFLUENCE. IN ADDITION, COGNITO IS KNOWN FOR DOCUMENTING LEGENDARY HIP HOP ARTISTS SUCH AS MOS DEF, DE LA SOUL, TALIB KWELI, MF DOOM AND KANYE WEST ON BOTH STILL AND VIDEO MEDIA. AN AFICIONADO OF SNEAKER CULTURE SINCE 1982, COGNITO, AKA "THE SHUCHEF," HAS HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF CONSULTING WITH A NUMBER OF MAJOR SHOE BRANDS ON MANY LEVELS FROM MARKET RESEARCH TO COMMUNITY OUTREACH. OVER THE YEARS HIS COLLECTION OF RARE SNEAKERS HAS BEEN EDITED DOWN FROM A RIDICULOUS AMOUNT TO NOW JUST UNDER 50 PAIRS OF CLASSIC TRAINERS — QUALITY OVER QUANTITY. AFTER SEEING HIS ORIGINAL JORDANS DRY-ROT FROM NOT WEARING THEM, HE NOW VOWS TO STICK TO HIS MOTTO "SNEAKERS ARE MEANT TO BE WORN, NOT TO SIT IN A CLOSET."

STR CRD Sneaker Event 2010

STR CRD was South Africa's first sneaker and streetwear convention. The event brought passionate streetwear lovers together from many avenues of Youth Culture. Visitors were treated to a promotional pop up village and displays of new sneaker collections from the likes of Nike, DC, New Balance, Adidas, Puma, Converse, 2BOP, Iron Fist and many other local and international brands.

Even the Skateboarders had something to do. Jamie O'Brien from Woodies Ramps made a big sick box complete with stairs, ledges and a kinked rail. The Boyz were killing it, with or without the commentary. I think Justus Kotze ended up winning and props to Will Twala for killin' it with a taped up busted wrist.

Graff artists, B-boy crews and hip hop groups were also on hand showing off their skills. It was great to see so many streetwear lovers in one place, many who flew in from places like Joburg, Durban and abroad.

One of the highlights for all the Sneaker Freaks was checking out the freshly customised kicks from Alex Nash, a renowned sneaker Artist. Some cats would have gladly bartered anything (even a family member) to go home with one of his highly sought-after sneakers.

Here are a few of the perspectives I came up with... Enjoy-

Strap a Really Expensive Camera To My Chest and See What Happens at Adidas Originals - Three Stories Cape Town (Video Clip)

For the past 5 weeks Adidas Originals has turned the Woodstock Industrial Centre into a massive 2010 World Cup Soccer viewing area and hipster loitering zone. The place has basically turned into a home where artists, sculptors, photographers and general trendsetters link up to watch the games, cool out and have a blast. Three Stories played host to six different Art Exhibitions, a top class mini-ramp downstairs, HD projector screen upstairs, free-flowing freshly-popped popcorn, a good selection of booze, homemade food, as well as live acts and DJ's rocking out just for kicks'. I played a few different roles over the more than month long event; I DJ'ed a few gigs (like at one of the main Graffiti Exhibitions) as well as helped host a couple fun skateboard events. In addition to my normal photo/jurno antics I was a contributing artist to a few of the exhibitions. During the first week I helped the film crew shoot some great skate footage on the mini-ramp. They strapped a very pricey high end digital SLR to my chest and had me skate the mini-ramp. The footage came out too sick, and i will make sure I get the raw clips from them. But in the mean time here is the short promo video for the event. Enjoy-

John Robinson (aka Lil Sci) Lays It Down In Cape Town

Underground Hip-Hop artist John Robinson aka Lil Sci came through to Cape Town to do a show at the Bar/Club Zula'. I have listened to him for while now, from around the time he started working with MF Doom. His rhyme style is proper and he does not go on and on about bull shit, most of the time he has something good to say. Unlike me, at this moment in time.... Bla Bla Bla, go get some of his music or better yet see one of his live shows. I went through to check out the vibe and get a few images for this Underground Hip-Hop Book I am working on (hush hush!- sorry, it will be another 5 plus year of shooting before it is done). While I was there I got a few things signed, the vinyl if for me beacuse DJ Just Be...? really digs to spin artist taged wax its the biz'. The other things like the album jacket might end up with a frined or on ebay, jokes(but who knows). Here are a few rad images that are not for the book. Enjoy-

DJ Just Be...? Opens up for People Under The Stairs

Yours truly,
DJ Just Be..?
Went to Durban, South Africa (in Nov. 09') to rock an opening set for Underground Hip-Hop legends People Under The Stairs. After wrongfully being served military detainment passes on their overseas flight, PUTS moved the gig to the next weekend. So I was suck in Durban for an extra week, surfing the warm water, skating with Braxton Haine (one of DBN's best young pros and a good friend I was staying with), visiting Bruce Gold during his short stay in Albert Luthuli Central, and sorting out stuff for my event\exhibition in Durban the next month. Anyways... I was happy and honored to play with PUTS; especially because I had gone to maybe a dozen of their shows back in the day in Cali and knew Thes One and Double K for a few years in the late 90's before they blew up huge all over the world. The flyers were rad, Akio had to work too hard, the Boyz were super amped on their short time in SA, the venue was nice\personal, and the pep's were gong bananas'. I had to play over 40 min. longer then I was meant to, but the vibe was getting mad live so I was kool with it. Loads of people gave me props' on my set even Thes One, Double K, Akio, and the club owner Athos (I dropped 90% classic underground Hip-Hop banggers' only and it was one of the better sets I played the whole year). By the time I got off the decks' the place was packed, there were even people moshing in the front. PUTS played all the classic tacks and some new stuff. Those lucky enough to get tickets got a real treat (a little over 200 people). Big up People Under The Stair keen to link up when I am back in the states...
Good Times
